Literature Text

Little pig, little pig, let me in!
I howl, lungs aching, at the house of straw.
Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!

You know the story of my huffin’ and puffin’
the way I know the back of my paws—
Little pig, little pig, let me in!

It’s the same thing — again and again,
this time a stick-house like the thin legs of macaws:
Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!

Predictably they run off, their house blown-in.
But this time no one can stop me, not even the law:
Little pig, little pig, let me in!

At the brick house I’m ravenous; last I ate was mutton
a week ago — the popped kernels of Bo Peep’s flock.
Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin!

all three squeal like a broken violin
as I inhale my final breath through giant, dripping jaws:
Little pig, little pig, let me in!
Not by the hair of my chinny-chin….
I really admire the determination of the wolf in the Three Little Pigs fairy tale. Tis my own little version -- hope you liked!

This was also the most fun I've had writing a villanelle. This was entered into the Villainous Villanelle Contest hosted by *PoetryPlease. I suggest entering -- it should be fun for all of you, too! Read the rules, though, as special conditions apply.

Oh, and critique is most welcome (as villanelles aren't exactly easy!).

I almost feel sorry for the wolf, him being so hungry and all...what else could he do but go after the pigs? And they're so snotty, they deserve to be eaten...

Great job on the poem.
