fllnthblnk presents the March Limerick Contest!
March is here! That means Spring is around the corner, St. Patrick's Day in a couple of weeks, and green green green should be blooming everywhere. And why not celebrate the month of green with some light-hearted fun with limericks! Everyone's heard of them, but they can be darn tricky like them leprechauns.
Here is a contest to show me what you've got! Concoct an awesome limerick; a strict adherence to form will be scrutinized. What are the rules regarding limericks exactly?
According to dA, limericks are "light-hearted poems of five anapestic lines, usually with the rhyme scheme 'a-a-b-b-a.'"
For a more in-depth analysis, visit this link to Poets.org's definition of a limerick: www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/pr…
Now that you've got that down, here is an example of a limerick by an anonymous author:
The limerick packs laughs anatomical
Into space that is quite economical,
But the good ones I've seen
So seldom are clean,
And the clean ones so seldom are comical.
Got it? Good. Now time for the specifics of the contest:
Rules:
The limerick must be a new deviation, submitted in the month of March of this year.
Only one entry per person please. No double-entries with secondary accounts.
Please send a note to my account, fllnthblnk, with a link to your entry.
Optional — A link in your Author's Comments to this news article will be greatly appreciated! Help spread the word!
Deadline:
March 31st.
You will have the entire month of March to create your magnum opus, so take your time and really focus on the rhythm and the rhyme scheme. All entries must be submitted to me before midnight, April 1st. Late entries will be ignored, so don't wait till the last minute!
Prizes:
1st Place-
-3 month subscription
-$25 Amazon.com gift card
-journal feature
2nd Place-
-3 month subscription
-$15 Amazon.com gift card
-journal feature
Honorable mentions-

Judging:
Judging will be done by yours truly. I accept bribes of cookies.
Tips:
I generally look for interesting use of words, words that pack a punch or hold strong connotation. Since the limerick poses restrictions, try to make every word count!
And no, your poem doesn't have to strictly follow the meter and maybe the rhyme scheme, but the content will have to be freaking awesome to make up for it... but to keep your chances of winning high, stick to the form as close as you can.
Good luck everybody!

DD + Life Update
Many thanks to GDeyke for featuring this little poem of mine: I wrote it back in 2018 after almost a year has passed since my boy's death. Poetry has left me, however, and I haven't had any inspiration to write anything else since then (though I've tried a couple times). I'm not sure if I'll write poetry again or anytime in the foreseeable future. However, that isn't to say I've abandoned writing altogether. I've been taking a short story writing class, and the professor has been impressed with my writing so far (a good sign, I hope!). I plan on posting some of those stories here once the semester is over in April. In other news, I've applied for a Master of Education program with a Higher Education Leadership emphasis. Fingers crossed that I get accepted. I hope to one day secure a position as an academic advisor while teaching a class or two as an adjunct on the side. Of course, we'll see where the future takes me! Additionally, I met a young man from Oklahoma who fills my days
Post-Graduation Update
Hi, everyone. Thought I'd update this thing. Been a couple years almost.
So I've finally graduated from college a couple months ago. Did a double major and got a B.S. in Nutrition Education and Health Promotion. Graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA. I was one of the student graduate speakers at my commencement; had the honor of addressing my fellow graduates in my college and all their family members and friends--got to write a nifty speech and everything! People kept stopping me afterwards to tell me how much they liked my speech, even at the restaurant where I celebrated.
I also won the Outstanding Student Graduate Award for both of m
Degree, new poem, updates, and shit.
Just wanted to offer a small update to whoever reads this shit.
So after two years of college, I've finally earned my Associate of Science in General Studies degree (with High Honors!), so hurrah for me. I plan on graduating with a Bachelor's in spring of 2018. In the meantime, I'm currently doing some undergraduate research with a Nutrition professor analyzing metabolic syndrome parameters in the college students who do the health assessment as part of gen ed. nutrition class. It's pretty fun working with and analyzing data.
If you hadn't noticed, I uploaded a poem simply titled Hello, and is the first original, non-Found piece I've writte
1st place--hooray!
Woke up to a nice surprise (more specifically, I overslept big time for work) and found I took 1st place in this contest: CRLiterature announces: The OuliPoetry Contest! There were a lot of great entries. You can check out the results here: OuliPoetry Contest: The Conclusion. Many thanks to the judges for running a fun contest. One thousand cookies for all of you.
