My friends have been murdered
    by porn and computer
    games; they won't play
    catch outside anymore,
But they'll juggle their balls
    while grinding their orcs
or elves or whatever the hell
these kids RP as these days.
They're being raped as we speak,
    willfully, smudging an ass
on the screen like it's a photo-
    copier, looking for that perfect
    MySpace shot, pleading us
    to rim them with comments.
My friends: they're out smoking pot,
which is fine, but when the pans
    start sizzlin', you should turn
down the heat just a notch.
They're frying bigger fish, they say,
while I'm out casting my net,
    solo, whistling a tune only
    the birds understand. The bees
Are calling them: my friends—the girls
and their pregnancy scares; the guys,
still unaware of the use of a condom
Or abstinence: my friends—they're drinking
    every night just to sleep
and think it's the only true
way to party! 1999 called me
Yesterday; I wanted nostalgia and memories,
    but my friends—my Goddamn friends—
drive drunk down the lane; now
I only see them in the obituaries.
The cheese stands alone.

Only Acquaintances by *fllnthblnk is an honest piece that doesn't mince words but says it plainly in the language of our generation. ( Featured by StJoan )

D: The first two stanzas are what happened to my friends.

Awesome poem.

I feel like this, often. The honesty is resonating, and sad. Thanks for your thoughts, though I relate to them all too well.

This poem makes me cry. All of my friends are like this. They are amazing, incredible people without the drugs or the hot boyfriends but they don't see what I see. I always thought I was the odd one out, but guess not.

My goodness... I'd say you need some new friends.

This is so ouch! but I guess we all needed that. I think you're very brave for choosing the unfashionable (read: BETTER) choice. (:

I can really relate to this poem, and I'll admit it- I'm still one of those computer-leechers described in here...but I'm on the "road to recovery" you could say - working on keeping up with extracurriculars and all that.
My friends, on the other hand, don't see all the opportunities the "outside world" holds for them - more than the internet, I tell them but...heh, maybe, in time, they'll see. I just hope my encouragement and suggestions get through.
D: thank you for writing this. It''s just amazing...very emotional - I love it.

This is excellent. I have some idiotic friends that do those stuff. Try to help them but end up hurting yourself

its very true. and i think it really applies to what is going on now, in this time. I agree that the old times are to be missed.

This is a poem so many can relate to. It has this pull in it, this breathtaking emotion of both disappointment, alienation and fury.
loondas Featured By Owner Jul 13, 2009
The world may be turing in that direction, but only because we all to often don't have the courage to stand up to it, and our friends. if the world is going to change, we have to push it to where WE want it to go. however, just knowing that is not always enough.

now, enough rambling, great work, and i hope for you to find happiness and true friends.

The emotion in this segment right here I could connect to and really feel, unlike most of what I read. Great poem.

This is not just my friends, this is my boyfriend, my brother, the two men I love most in this world. I unexpectedly found your words and they cut--they're that good.

"Goddamn[ed] friends"?

I think it's good at being frank without being cliche as so much is these days. Also reminds me of some Dashboard songs.

Thanks for writing

I favourited this poem long ago, and still I come back and read it again and again. It's written simply but you've managed to capture this feeling of frustration and not quite understanding what went wrong while at the same time seeing all too clearly that it has and how hopeless that can feel.
I just got a phone call from an old friend in the middle of the night and it made me think of the last stanza, so here I am to read again.
Thanks for one of my favourite poems.

but I will say this much

Wow... this poem is amazing and the disturbing thing is that it's true.. Most of my mates have been consumed by that fucken Wow game and they don't even wanna hang out with mates anymore....
fllnthblnk Featured By Owner Feb 11, 2009  Hobbyist Writer
I know what you mean! I remember going to my friends' house (there was about 6 of 'em all rooming together) and when I walked in to where they all had their computers set up, not one of them even looked up from their screen or said "hi" to me. And I haven't seen any of them for a year! For some, computer games are just too addicting...

Not sure if this is the right expression in English, but great structure, the words are perfectly following each other...and such an everyday subject gets a poetic taste.Lovely, just lovely.
