In the abandoned remains that haunt the bottom of my coffee mug, or the moments between sips when there is harsh, cold sunlight slipping through the blinds. I hear you there in the anonymity of morning birdsong and its shy beauty— when I remain unknown. Sometimes I carry each generous song to bed and watch as everything dims slowly into dusk, reveling in that familiarity. There you are, in the slow dance of sunset, as the neighbors string their arguments indoors or tidy up the kitchen as couples do, I'd imagine. But there is also hope—the spectral glow that opens from the phone in my tired hands. It is now a light without warmth, a companion through the night that mimics an old language you once spoke, a ghost that only exists as superstition, as a faulty wish. Sleep will escape me again—when I patiently measure the weight of the cool, thin blanket or the time skipping between each heartbeat. And I will rise tomorrow, groggy but convinced of their mistake.
